MMORPG, a massively multiplayer online role-playing game, or often called abbreviated MMORPG is a genre of role-playing game in which many players over the Internet interactively play together.

As in all RPGs , players take on the role of an avatar (usually in a fantasy world ), and they have control over the actions of their avatar. MMORPGs are distinguished from single – Player or small multiplayer RPGs by the large number of players and by the ” persistent virtual world .”

Many MMORPGs require a subscription, other MMORPGs are free. Sometimes this betas or versions that are more limited than that version which must be paid. Another possibility is that the game itself is free, but there may be obtained for objects or play money

MMORPGs are played overall on the world. Worldwide revenues from MMORPGs in 2005 reached the limit of half a billion dollars. And western revenue $ 1 billion in 2006. In 2008, Western players gave $ 1.4 billion to MMORPGs.

History of MMORPG

The term MMORPG was coined by Richard Garriott in 1997, he was the creator of Ultima Online. At that time they called this kind of games graphical MUDs. Through this connection to the roots of the MMORPGs can be found in the first multi-user games such as Mazewar (1974) and MUD1 (1978).

1985 Island of Kesmai was a “roguelike” MUD, developed for CompuServe Network and LucasArts produced the graphical MUD Habitat.

The first full graphical multi-user RPG was Neverwinter Nights, which was released by America Online in 1991 and personally as the best MUD crowned by AOL President Steve Case.Another milestone came in 1995 when NSFNET restrictions were lifted, which opened up the Internet for game developers and thus was the first true “massively multiplayer” admitted RPGs.

Ultima Online from 1997, is the first MMORPG according to many, what made the genre so popular, though there was more mainstream attention for EverQuest (1999 ) in the west, and Nexus: The Kingdom of the Winds (1996) in Asia.

Financially the success of these first titles has ensured that since that time, that there is competition in this genre. Meanwhile, there are now already MMORPG’s for consoles and other platforms, allowing players to enjoy a higher quality gaming experience.

The market is currently dominated by Blizzard Entertainment’s World of Warcraft as the biggest “pay-to-play” MMORPG. In 2011 a new MMORPG hit the market with the name Star Wars: The Old Republic, which will dethrone according to many World of Warcraft.
